Placement Year

A placement year is optional for BU Psychology students. Some students prefer to gain the experience they need while they study, while others wait till after they complete their degree. It is becoming increasingly popular to gain the experience during a placement year instead. This can consist of one placement for 30 weeks, or several smaller placements throughout the year.

90% of all BU graduates (source: graduate-jobs.com) have gained relevant work experience while undertaking their placement. This can give BU students an advantage in the competitive jobs market, as now a degree is no longer enough to make you stand out.

During the first semester of your second year, you will receive lectures from your Careers Advisor on placements and employability. These are mandatory lectures that are not only helpful for students considering placements, but for all students as they focus on employability skills that are relevant for looking for a job at any stage of your degree.

When looking for a placement, MyCareerHub will advertise jobs that are already 'psychology approved'. If you find a placement that is not on MyCareerHub, you will need your careers advisor to approve it.

This is an example of previous 'psychology approved' placements on MyCareerHub.
